The JD Chain Nose Hackamore measures 8.5” from the top of the shank, straight down to the bottom of the shank. The chain nosepiece is smaller link chain wrapped in electrical tape to protect the horse's nose. This hackamore is considered to have more bite on the nose of a horse as compared to a rope nose hackamore but is a very popular choice for a lot of experienced riders. 
Hackamores should hang low on the bridge of the nose just above the soft part of the nostril to be most effective. Curb chains should be adjusted properly and about 2 fingers should be able to slide between it and your horse. If its too loose or too tight it effects how the hackamore is working on your horse making it obsolete.
