The JD Rope Nose Hackamore measures 8.5” from the top of the shank, straight down to the bottom of the shank. A rope nosepiece lays across the horse's nose and should be adjusted properly so it doesn’t sit too high or too low. 
Hackamores should hang low on the bridge of the nose just above the soft part of the nostril to be most effective. Curb chains should be adjusted properly and about 2 fingers should be able to slide between it and your horse. If its too loose or too tight it effects how the hackamore is working on your horse making it obsolete.
